We are now going to reveal one of our most important secrets. Here it is: we have a lot of fun making soap products. So for a fun summer project, we decided to combine three of our favorite things – rainwater, charcoal soap, and shampoo bars.
Why rainwater? We’re just in love with our rainwater, which we get from Liz’s rain barrel. The water we get from our public utilities contains additives like chlorine, fluoride and more to make it safe for drinking and cooking. But rainwater does not contain those additives. Rainwater is softer and, therefore, it leaves your hair feeling softer. So we have been using it in all kinds of products, sometimes combining it with nutrient rich ingredients such as aloe vera, or honey, or eggs, (for our Happy Yolk Soap).
Now, we admit that at first, putting charcoal in our hair may sound a little strange. But activated charcoal is amazingly absorbent. It draws out dirt and toxins. Users report that it helps relieve oily, itchy scalps and dandruff. The result? Soft, beautifully clean hair.
In case you are not familiar with shampoo bars, they are simply shampoo in bar form. Why do we make shampoo bars? Well, if you travel, you probably have the rule “no liquids more than 3.4 ounces” memorized. And if you are gone more than one night, one of those tiny little travel-sized shampoo containers don’t last very long. Shampoo bars, however, are solid, rather than liquid, so you don’t violate the dreaded 3.4 ounce rule. And while we have never actually counted, we estimate that you can get about 50 shampoos, maybe more, from each bar, so you won’t run out in mid-travel. Finally, once they are gone, no plastic bottles to toss into a landfill.
So that’s just one of our summer projects – shampoo bars made with rainwater and charcoal. We are also experimenting with wine and beer soap, and have plans to make some “pie” soaps. More on that later.
Enjoy your summer!
