A Natural Label: What Does It Mean?

I recently inquired on Instagram and Facebook, asking what people assume when they see the word “natural” on soap packaging. I wasn’t surprised to find that everybody had a different answer. Although all the answers were similar, there were some key differences. I saw comments with the words clean, safe, no artificial, and organic ingredients. Today I will explain what we mean when we label our products “natural”, and why you should to be cautious when you see it on other brands.

Misleading Natural Labels

I will be the first to admit that soap and beauty products can mislead me to believe it is the “best” or the most “natural”. However, a lot of times companies use labels to claim their product heals, cures, or is the purest.

Did you know that according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, “If the product contains synthetic detergents, it’s a cosmetic, not a soap. However, the word “soap” can be used on the label.” A majority of soap sold in stores these days is actually synthetic detergents. How misleading is that!

The labeling for soap products is so lax that you can use the term, “natural” on your soap label, yet have synthetic ingredients such as fragrance. This just goes to show that you really need to do your research on what products you are choosing to put on your skin.

Natural Labels On Our Products

Natural Label

“All Natural” is what is stated on our logo. It is a term that we define our soap and products by. That means we strive to make soap that is safe, and pure.

We started Sweetie Pie Soaps to make soap that our family could use. We wanted to know where our products were coming from. Years before we transitioned from a hobby to a business we laid down our values. Two of our main values are honesty and health.

Our ingredients are always available to you in person and online. From the beginning we have avoided fragrances, and instead have used essential oils or essential oil blends. We have avoided artificial colorants, but periodically use mica colorants. You may have noticed a lot of our soaps have very similar shades of white or brown. This is because we are only adding natural ingredients to the soap. Our soaps will never be blue, with purple swirls, or have frilly sparkles. We believe soap shouldn’t be about making it look like a cupcake, but about nourishing your skin while still feeling pampered and loved.

Enjoy our natural, pure soap, and keep a close eye on our website as we will have some natural fall soaps available very soon!
