We were able to get together and make soap, right before the quarantine. Those soaping days are always so much fun, as we make your favorites and try out new recipes. This time, we made donkey milk soap.
Why Donkey Milk Soap?
At first, it sounded strange to us, too. We admit, donkeys are adorable, but when you think about them, luxury soap is probably the last thing that comes to mind. However, the benefits of donkey milk have been known since ancient times. According to legend, Cleopatra bathed in donkey milk. Reportedly, no less than 700 donkeys were needed to provide the quantity of milk necessary for her daily bath. Napoleon’s sister, Pauline Bonaparte, used donkey milk as part of her skin care regimen.
“What is donkey milk soap?”
Think of it like goat’s milk soap, but from a different animal. Donkey milk has many health benefits. It is quite similar to human milk and has very high concentrations of vitamin E, amino acids, vitamins A, B1, B6, C, D, E and Omega’s 3 and 6.
Skin Benefits
Bath and body products made with donkey milk are very good for your skin, providing balanced nourishment and excellent hydration. In fact, the vitamin C content in donkey milk is almost 4 times that found in cow’s milk. Many users report that donkey milk soap calms skin irritations and reduces skin problems, such as eczema and psoriasis.
The Search for Donkey Milk
The real challenge of donkey milk soap is obtaining the donkey milk. They are not like cows. Donkeys have to be milked by hand and they only produce small amounts of milk for limited periods of time. They must have their babies around for production to continue. Once the babies are fed, there’s only a little left for donkey milk devotees. There are only a few farms in the United States that sell it. Our search ended up involving a friend who made an epic journey for the purpose of adopting a male donkey and was kind enough to deliver an order of frozen milk to us. So that’s how we came to make donkey milk soap. We figured, if it’s good enough for Cleopatra and Pauline Bonaparte, it’s good enough for us. If you want to try it out, don’t delay. We have a limited supply and who knows when we will be able to get our hands on more donkey milk!
