I’ve always liked soap. I’m not sure what it was, but the soap in my mother’s (Liz’s Grandma) bathroom
always had a beautifully clean and fresh scent. It was the kind of scent that made you want to wash your
hands. The kind that caused you to surreptitiously sniff your hands later, just to get a whiff of the scent.
The Crafty Soap
Mom went through a “crafty” stage at one point. I’m not exactly sure how she did it, but it involved
putting pretty, Christmas pictures on small guest sized soaps. These were placed in the bathroom around the holidays, along with the special, Christmas guest towels. My mother loved Christmas. It’s those kind
of little touches that made her Christmases so special.
The Smell of the Soap
Much later, long after she was gone, I realized that Liz and I both had a habit of picking up soaps in stores
and inhaling the scent. That’s about the time we started making soap, first as a hobby and then later selling
it so that the house wasn’t overtaken with our production. Her little brother used to help me wrap them. I
think he liked the way they smelled, too.
I don’t know if I ever told my mother how much I loved and appreciated the way she made Christmas so special. I hope she knew.
Meanwhile, Liz and I continue on our long-running and often hilarious quest to
make the best smelling soap we can. And I’m grateful for all the wonderful, (and very clean,) people in my life.
May all of them, and you, be safe and happy in the New Year.
